Examples of Conditions We Evaluate and Their Definitions

Cataracts:  This is a clouding of the lens located inside the eye and behind the pupil.   It is related to age and UV light exposure.  The patient experiences decreased vision; however, after surgery to remove the cataracts, vision is significantly improved and glasses are often no longer needed.

Macular Degeneration:  The macula is the center of the retina which is located in the back of the eye providing us with a “screen” to see.  Moderate vision loss can occur and there could be central vision loss.   Eye specific vitamins can be prescribed to help the degeneration.  More advanced progression may require medicine to be injected into the eye.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve due to fluid pressure inside the eye.  Symptoms include a gradual loss of peripheral vision initially and possible blindness if untreated.  Basic treatment involves eye drops.

Keratoconus: This is a disorder where the cornea, the clear front portion of the eye, becomes cone shaped. Eye glass prescriptions can help mild cases, but if the cornea gets significantly cone shaped, hard contacts or surgery might be needed.
